According to a recent Health Ministry report, till February 24 this year, the total number of deaths due to Swine Flu has reached 926 while the number of affected persons across the country stood at 16,235.
The anti-viral medicine oseltamivir that is useful in treating swine flu is available free in all designated hospitals and also at private pharmacies for about Rs 2000 for a strip of 10 tablets. However, one would need a prescription signed and stamped by a government doctor to get free medicines.
Meanwhile, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization has released a complete list of all the names and addresses of sale premises holding schedule x license for sale of “oseltamivir” formulations.
Drugs Controller General, Dr.G.N.Singh, released the list in the offcial website of the drug control organisation. Here is an excerpt from the press release.
"In view of the current situation of spreading of Swine flu in the country, CDSCO is continuously engaged in monitoring the availability of drugs, vaccine and diagnostic kits used for the control of Swine Flu. All State Drugs Controllers have been requested to take necessary measures to ensure that the drugs, vaccine and diagnostics kits of standard quality are available particularly in the affected States. The concerned manufacturers / importers have also been sensitized to take all necessary measures to ensure the availability of the drugs, vaccine and diagnostic kits in the country.
Any dealer who has the license to sell, stock or distribute the drugs specified under the Schedule X to the Drugs and Cosmetic Rules, is authorized to sell the formulation of Oseltamavir Phosphate used for the treatment and prevention of Swine Flu. A list of such license holders in various parts of the country, as collected from the States in December, 2009 by the CDSCO is attached herewith for information of all concerned. Further all the State / UT Drugs Controllers have been requested to provide updated list of Schedule X licensees urgently for uploading on CDSCO website."
